Billing FAQ.
How is Palimpsa different from Google Docs?
Mostly: the research panel, the maths, and the slower velocity of decisions. Google Docs is excellent at being a generic word processor for everyone; Palimpsa is built specifically for people who write while citing things. We also don't auto-save your drafts as training data for anyone, ever.
Can I switch plans?
Yes, any time. Upgrades prorate the current period. Downgrades take effect at the end of the period — you keep what you paid for. If a downgrade would lose access to documents (e.g. shared workspaces on Team), we keep them read-only for 90 days so you can export.
What about annual billing?
Annual saves you about two months on Pro. We invoice once a year, renew automatically, and let you switch back to monthly at the next renewal.
VAT and invoices?
Prices shown are excluding VAT. UK VAT and EU reverse-charge are calculated at checkout. We email an invoice immediately after payment; reissues are free.
What happens to my documents if I cancel?
Read-only access for 30 days. Export everything as PDF, DOCX, Markdown, HTML or plain text from the document menu. After 30 days, documents are hard-deleted. Or email privacy@beyond-the-box.uk to delete sooner.
Do you train AI on my writing?
No. We don't train any model on user content, and Palimpsa has no generative AI for writing — there's no autocomplete, no 'rewrite this paragraph', no AI typing assistance of any kind. The 'check research', 'spot flaws', 'check citations' and submission-audit buttons explicitly send the relevant excerpt to external analysis systems under zero-retention contracts. Each click is its own consent event, and you can disable AI entirely in Settings.
A note on Stripe.
Stripe is wired up but live keys aren't connected yet. If you click "Subscribe" before that lands you'll see a clear "Stripe not configured" message rather than a crash. We'd rather get this right than rush it.
