How to Use a Writing Prompt
A prompt isn't a rigid instruction; it's a seed. The goal isn't to follow it perfectly, but to see where it leads you. Here are a few ways to get the most out of any prompt:
Twist the Premise
Don't be afraid to change things. Take a fantasy prompt and write it as sci-fi. Tell the story from the villain's point of view. Ask "what if?" about the most basic assumption in the prompt and run with the answer.
Focus on the Character's "Why"
The most interesting part of any story is why the character acts. Why does the detective take the case? What past trauma drives the archivist? A prompt gives you the "what," but you create the story when you explore the "why."
Use it as a Freewriting Exercise
Set a timer for 10 minutes. Start writing based on the prompt and don't stop, don't edit, and don't judge. The goal is to get words on the page and unlock the creative part of your brain. You might just stumble upon an idea you love.
